2-Day Itinerary for Wayanad in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Pookode Lake
25 minutes (8.3 km) from Kalpetta

Start your day at Pookode Lake, a freshwater lake surrounded by lush forests. Take a pedal boat ride or go for a hike on one of the nature trails. In the afternoon, visit the Chain Tree, a historic Ficus tree that's said to be haunted. Legend has it that a British engineer was killed by a tribal man near this tree, and his spirit haunted the place until a priest chained the spirit to the tree. In the evening, head to the Lakkidi View Point to enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding hills and valleys.

  2. Day 2: Edakkal Caves
40 minutes (15.7 km) from Sulthan Bathery

Start your day with a visit to the Edakkal Caves, a series of ancient rock shelters that are famous for their prehistoric rock art. The caves are located on top of a hill, so be prepared for a steep climb. In the afternoon, head to the Soochipara Waterfalls, which cascade down from a height of 200 feet, surrounded by lush forests. Take a dip in the cool waters or just relax by the waterfall. In the evening, visit the Jain Temple at Sultan Bathery, which is believed to be over 800 years old.

Recommendations

If you have time, consider visiting the Banasura Sagar Dam, the second-largest earthen dam in Asia, or the Thirunelli Temple, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. You can also go on a trek in the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary or visit the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary to see elephants, tigers, and other wild animals. To maximize your fun, try the local cuisine, which includes bamboo rice, fish curry, and appam with stew. Don't forget to try the local tea, which is grown in the nearby tea gardens.
