Exploring Amritsar in July 2023

Amritsar, the vibrant and cultural hub of Punjab, is an excellent destination for those looking to experience the rich history, food, and architecture of the region. Below is a three-day itinerary that will take you to the most popular spots in the city.

  1. Day 1: Golden Temple
10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Amritsar Junction railway station

In the morning, head to the Golden Temple, the holiest site for the Sikh religion. The temple is a stunning work of architecture, with a shimmering gold exterior, and is surrounded by a tranquil pool. Spend a few hours exploring the temple complex, learn about Sikhism, and partake in the community kitchen service offering free food to all visitors. In the afternoon, head to Jallianwala Bagh, a public garden and memorial that honors the victims of the tragic 1919 massacre. Wrap up your day with a visit to the Partition Museum, which tells the emotional story of the partition of India and Pakistan.

  2. Day 2: Wagah Border and Amritsar Bazaars
45 minutes (17 miles) from Golden Temple

Start your day early and head to Wagah Border, which is the border crossing between India and Pakistan. Enjoy the patriotic fervor of the border ceremony which takes place every evening and attracts a large crowd. In the afternoon, head back to the city and explore the bustling bazaars of Amritsar, where you can buy local handicrafts, jewelry, clothes, and indulge in delectable street food. Visit Katra Jaimal Singh market, Guru Bazaar, and Hall Bazaar. In the evening, head to Kesar Da Dhaba, one of the oldest restaurants in Amritsar, known for its authentic Punjabi cuisine.

  3. Day 3: Durgiana Temple and Ram Bagh Gardens
20 minutes (3.5 miles) from Amritsar Bazaars

In the morning, visit Durgiana Temple, which is a replica of the Golden Temple and a major Hindu shrine in the city. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Durga and is a beautiful example of Hindu architecture. Afterward, head to Ram Bagh Gardens, where you can relax, unwind, and enjoy the natural beauty of the park. The garden houses a museum dedicated to Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the iconic ruler of Punjab. In the evening, head to the iconic Trillium mall, located in the heart of the city, and indulge in some shopping and dining.

Recommendations

Amritsar is a city that has something for everyone, and there are many more places to explore. Consider visiting the historic Gobindgarh Fort, the ancient Tarn Taran Sahib Gurudwara, or the beautiful Harike Wetland, which is an hour's drive from the city. You can also take a day trip to the nearby town of Gurdaspur and visit the iconic Batala Bazaar, which is known for its exquisite silver jewelry and handicrafts. To maximize your fun, we recommend taking a food tour of Amritsar's street food or booking a heritage walking tour of the city. With so much to see and do, Amritsar is an excellent destination for a cultural and educational holiday.
