2-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary for Pune in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Shaniwar Wada
    15 minutes (6.2 km) from Pune airport

    Start your day at the famed Shaniwar Wada. The seat of the Peshwa rulers, this 18th-century fort offers a glimpse into the Maratha Empire's history. Explore the various buildings, gardens and fountains inside the fort. Don't miss the light and sound show which narrates the fort's history. For lunch, head to the nearby Vaishali restaurant known for its authentic Maharashtrian cuisine. In the afternoon, head to Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, which has an extensive collection of Indian artefacts and handicrafts. For dinner, savour the local street food at JM Road. Try the famous vada pav and misal pav.

  2. Day 2: Aga Khan Palace
    30 minutes (12.4 km) from Shaniwar Wada

    Start your day at Aga Khan Palace, a monument of national importance. Built in 1892, it holds immense historical significance, as it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi. The palace also houses the Gandhi Memorial Museum, which has a collection of photographs and personal belongings of the Mahatma. For lunch, head to the nearby German Bakery Café for its sumptuous sandwiches and pastries. In the afternoon, visit the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Centre, home to over 160 species of animals. For dinner, head to the Dario’s restaurant and enjoy its delicious Italian cuisine.

Recommendations

If you have some spare time, you can go for a trek at the Sinhagad Fort or visit the beautiful Aga Khan Palace Garden. Alternatively, visit the Vishrambaug Wada, a historical mansion with a beautiful courtyard. For a relaxing evening, try out Osho Ashram, or enjoy a boat ride at Khadakwasla Dam. Do not forget to try out the local sweet delicacy, 'Mastani', a thick milkshake with ice cream.

For side trips, you can visit the hill stations of Lonavala and Khandala, which are about 70 km from Pune. You can also go for a day trip to the ancient Ajanta and Ellora caves. These UNESCO World Heritage sites are about 120 km from Pune.
