7-Day Nature Itinerary for Kedarnath in May 2024

  1. Day 1: Kedarnath Temple
    Located in Kedarnath
    5 minutes (0.2 miles) from Kedarnath Bus Stand

    In the morning, visit the Kedarnath Temple which is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The temple opens at 5:00 AM and offers morning aarti at 7:00 AM. Spend the rest of the day exploring the surrounding natural beauty of Kedarnath.

  2. Day 2: Vasuki Tal
    Located in Kedarnath
    3 hours (4.7 miles) from Kedarnath Temple

    Start early in the morning and trek to Vasuki Tal, a picturesque high altitude lake surrounded by Himalayan mountains. The trek is challenging but the stunning scenery is worth it. The trek starts at Sonprayag and is approximately 14 km long.

  3. Day 3: Gandhi Sarovar
    Located in Kedarnath
    1 hour 30 minutes (3.8 miles) from Vasuki Tal

    After breakfast, trek to Gandhi Sarovar which is a glacial lake named after Mahatma Gandhi. The trek offers spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and glaciers. The trek starts from Kedarnath and is approximately 14 km long.

  4. Day 4: Tungnath Temple
    Located in Chopta
    2 hours 30 minutes (34.1 miles) from Gandhi Sarovar

    Drive to Chopta and trek to Tungnath Temple which is the highest Shiva temple in the world. The trek is easy to moderate and offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges. The temple opens at 6:00 AM and offers morning aarti at 7:00 AM.

  5. Day 5: Deoria Tal
    Located in Sari Village
    2 hours 20 minutes (36.2 miles) from Tungnath Temple

    Drive to Sari village and trek to Deoria Tal which is a serene lake located at an altitude of 2,438 meters. The trek is easy and offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and forests.

  6. Day 6: Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary
    Located in Kedarnath
    2 hours (21.6 miles) from Deoria Tal

    Visit the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary which is home to a variety of animals including musk deer, Himalayan black bears, and snow leopards. The sanctuary also offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan mountains and glaciers.

  7. Day 7: Chorabari Tal/ Gandhi Sarovar Trek
    Located in Kedarnath
    2 hours 20 minutes (4.7 miles) from Kedarnath Temple

    Trek to Chorabari Tal which is a crystal clear lake located at an altitude of 3,900 meters. The trek offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks and glaciers. Alternatively, you can also choose to do the Gandhi Sarovar Trek again and spend some time relaxing by the lake before heading back to Kedarnath.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, you can consider visiting the nearby towns of Guptkashi and Ukhimath. You can also plan a day trip to the picturesque hill station of Auli which is famous for skiing and snowboarding. To maximize your fun, try local delicacies like Kachmauli and Bal Mithai which are popular sweets of the region. Finally, make sure to carry warm clothes and suitable trekking gear as the weather can be unpredictable in the mountains.
