3-Day Family-Friendly Itinerary for Utrecht in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Utrecht City Center
    10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Utrecht Centraal Station

    In the morning, start your day at the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Climb the 465 steps to the top for a breathtaking view of the city. In the afternoon, wander through the picturesque Oudegracht canal district, and enjoy a boat tour to see the city from a different perspective. In the evening, visit the Railway Museum, which has interactive exhibits and a variety of trains to explore.

  2. Day 2: Miffy Museum and De Haar Castle
    30 minutes (5.5 miles) from Utrecht City Center

    In the morning, head to the Miffy Museum, dedicated to the adorable children's book character created by Dutch artist Dick Bruna. Kids will love the interactive exhibits and Miffy-themed activities. In the afternoon, drive to De Haar Castle, one of the most impressive castles in the Netherlands. Take a guided tour of the castle and gardens or enjoy a picnic on the sprawling grounds. In the evening, catch a movie at the Kinepolis Jaarbeurs cinema.

  3. Day 3: Amersfoort Zoo and Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet
    45 minutes (25 miles) from Utrecht City Center

    In the morning, visit Amersfoort Zoo, home to over 150 different animal species. Highlights include the primate house, butterfly garden, and the DinoPark. In the afternoon, drive to Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet, a shopping mecca with over 150 stores. Kids will love playing in the playground while parents enjoy discounts on designer brands. In the evening, head back to Utrecht for dinner at one of the city's many family-friendly restaurants.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider visiting the quaint town of Zeist, only 20 minutes from Utrecht, which has a beautiful castle and gardens. For a side trip, drive to the beach town of Scheveningen, only an hour away, for a day of sun, sand, and surf. To maximize your fun, consider renting bikes and exploring Utrecht's many bike paths. Lastly, don't forget to try stroopwafels, a traditional Dutch treat, and visit the local markets for souvenirs and fresh produce.
