2-Day Foodie Itinerary in Madurai in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple
    10 minutes (2.3 km) from Madurai Railway Station

    Early in the morning, visit Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple, one of the most famous temples in South India. The temple has four main entrances, and each entrance leads to a different area of the temple. Take a guided tour to learn about the history and significance of the temple. Afterward, enjoy a South Indian breakfast at Murugan Idli Shop, located near the temple, famous for its fluffy idlis and dosas. In the afternoon, head to the Gandhi Memorial Museum, which houses a collection of exhibits and pictures illustrating the life and achievements of Mahatma Gandhi. In the evening, visit the Madurai market to explore the local food scene and try delicacies like Jigarthanda, a refreshing drink made with milk, almond gum, and sarsaparilla.

  2. Day 2: Puthu Mandapam and Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace
    15 minutes (3 km) from Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple

    Start the day with breakfast at Murugan Idli Shop. Then, head to Puthu Mandapam, a historic monument located in the heart of Madurai. The place is known for its textile and handicraft shops where you can buy some souvenirs. In the afternoon, head to Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace, an important historical palace built-in 1636 AD. The palace is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Take a guided tour to learn about the history and architecture of the palace. In the evening, head to Amma Mess, one of the best places in Madurai to try local non-veg food. Try their famous chicken biryani or mutton chukka.

If you have more time, you can also visit the Alagar Kovil, a temple located on a hill. Another must-visit place is the Koodal Azhagar temple, known for its intricate sculptures and carvings. If you want to take a side trip, you can head to Kodaikanal, a hill station located a few hours from Madurai.
