A Relaxing 3-Day Itinerary in Varkala, September 2023

  1. Day 1: Varkala Beach
    5 minutes (1.3 km) from your hotel

    In the morning, head to the Varkala Beach and enjoy a relaxing walk by the seaside. Take a dip in the clear waters of the Arabian Sea. In the afternoon, relax under an umbrella and enjoy the sea breeze. In the evening, try some local seafood at one of the many restaurants on the beach.

  2. Day 2: Janardanaswamy Temple and Kappil Lake
    20 minutes (8.7 km) from Varkala Beach

    In the morning, visit the Janardanaswamy Temple, one of the oldest temples in Kerala. Take a stroll around the temple complex and marvel at its beautiful architecture. In the afternoon, head to Kappil Lake, a serene backwater surrounded by coconut groves. Take a boat ride, or just sit back and enjoy the view. In the evening, head back to your hotel and relax.

  3. Day 3: Ponnumthuruthu Island
    1 hour (23.4 km) from Kappil Lake

    In the morning, take a scenic drive to the nearby Ponnumthuruthu Island, known as the 'Golden Island'. Take a ferry to the island and explore the lush greenery, ancient temple and the beautiful beaches. In the afternoon, head back to Varkala and relax on the beach. In the evening, head to the cliff area and enjoy the beautiful sunset.

Recommendations

If you have some extra time, consider visiting the Anjengo Fort, a 17th-century fort located around 5 km from Varkala. You can also take a side trip to the nearby backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake.
