Nature-lover's Wayanad Itinerary in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Chembra Peak
1 hour 15 minutes (29.5 km) from Calicut Airport

Begin your day early with a refreshing hike to Chembra Peak, the highest peak in Wayanad. The trek takes about 3 hours and is moderately difficult, but the stunning view of the heart-shaped lake at the top is worth it. After the trek, enjoy a picnic lunch and relax amidst lush green surroundings at the foothills. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Soochipara Waterfalls, a three-tiered waterfall cascading from a height of 200 meters, ideal for a refreshing dip and a scenic photo-op. In the evening, head to Pookode Lake for a serene boat ride surrounded by the Western Ghats.

  2. Day 2: Kuruva Island
1 hour 20 minutes (38.5 km) from Chembra Peak

Spend the morning exploring the uninhabited Kuruva Island, a river delta formed by the Kabini river. Take a 2 km walk through the island's lush forests, cross bamboo bridges, and witness the confluence of the Kabini and Panamaram rivers. Afternoon visit to Edakkal Caves, an ancient rock shelter with petroglyphs dating back to 6000 BCE. An hour-long uphill trek to the caves is breathtaking with stunning views of the Wayanad hills. In the evening, head to the nearby Jain Temple at Sulthan Bathery, an ancient temple with intricate carvings and a peaceful atmosphere.

  3. Day 3: Thirunelli Temple and Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary
1 hour 45 minutes (53 km) from Kuruva Island

Begin the day with a visit to the ancient Thirunelli Temple, one of the oldest temples in Kerala, nestled amidst the Brahmagiri hills. Take a dip in the holy Papanasini river before offering prayers at the temple. Afternoon visit to Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary, a birdwatcher's paradise with exotic species like the Malabar trogon, grey-headed bulbul and blue-winged parakeet. The sanctuary can be visited only with prior permission from the forest department, and a 7 km (one way) trek is required to reach the watchtower. End the day with a visit to the Banasura Sagar Dam, the largest earthen dam in India which offers a mesmerizing sunset view.

Recommendations

If you have an extra day, visit the nearby Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary for a thrilling safari ride. For a unique cultural experience, attend a performance of Theyyam, a traditional ritualistic dance form of Malabar region. If you are looking for a side trip, consider visiting the beautiful hill station of Coorg, just a 4-hour drive from Wayanad. To maximize your fun, try some local delicacies like Malabar biryani, appam with stew, and banana chips. We recommend booking accommodations in advance using this link.
