Of 105 itineraries created on August 31, the most detailed cluster centers on a six-day loop through Hot Springs, Custer, Spearfish, Deadwood and Devils Tower before a noon departure from Rapid City on October 8.
These travelers are not planning a single-stop getaway. Their wish lists link the region’s headline sights—Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Wind Cave, Jewel Cave and Badlands National Park—with scenic drives and smaller stops including Sylvan Lake, Legion Lake, Iron Mountain Road, Needles Eye Tunnel, Bear Butte State Park and Roughlock Falls. Hot Springs is frequently positioned as the first overnight stop, while Spearfish and Deadwood anchor the northern Black Hills portion of the route.
History and heritage are also shaping the itineraries. Visitors are adding the Mammoth Site, Minuteman Missile sites, the Museum of the American Bison, the Coolidge Inn and Summer White House, plus the State Game Lodge and its Laughing Water Restaurant. Still, the day belongs to the Black Hills. The concentration of Denver-to-South Dakota plans shows travelers treating the region as a richly layered road-trip destination—one where iconic monuments, underground caves, bison country and historic frontier towns can fit into a single October itinerary.
