Day 1: Arrival & Kochi
Kochi (Fort Kochi/Cherai), India on August 29, 2025
Land at COK in the morning; collect luggage and take the KSRTC/airport shuttle or app-based taxi to Ernakulam/ Fort Kochi area. Public bus + short ferry is cheapest; allow time for transfers with 6 people and luggage.
Walk the Fort Kochi waterfront; see Chinese nets, colonial buildings and St. Francis Church (open typically 9:00am–5:00pm). Great introductory photos and low-cost walking tour.
Take the ferry + short bus/auto to Cherai (approx 40–60min). Cherai is a long sandy beach with fewer crowds — good for a late afternoon swim and sunset. Ferry services run frequently; check times locally.
Hire 2 scooters (carry luggage safe in hotel) to move along Cherai/ Fort Kochi and nearby beaches — recommended if comfortable riding. Helmets provided; carry ID and driving licence.
Simple breakfast at the guesthouse (tea, masala omelette, appam) and leave early to catch a public bus/volvo to Munnar. Early start reduces journey traffic.
Short visit to tea museum to learn processing and easy walk through tea gardens — photogenic and informative. Museum generally open 9:30am–5pm; confirm locally.
Visit early to try and see the Nilgiri tahr and enjoy shola grasslands; entry is ticketed and limits may apply so arrive early or check online/with homestay. It's the highlight wildlife spot in Munnar.
Shared boat ride on Periyar Lake to spot elephants, deer and birds; very rewarding wildlife experience with local naturalists on board. Boat rides fill up — aim for early/afternoon slots and confirm at the ticket counter.
Guided walk through a spice garden to see pepper, cardamom, clove and vanilla — informative and inexpensive; many family-run gardens offer quick tours.
Take an early state bus or private bus to Alleppey; the route descends from hills to backwater plains. Seats should be booked if possible for comfort for 6 people.
Instead of an expensive overnight houseboat, take a 2–3 hour shared boat/ canoe through local canals to experience village life — cheaper and immersive (operators operate 8:00am–5:00pm).
Board a local train southwards to Varkala (book tickets early); trains are the most economical and give coastal views on approach to Varkala/Kollam region.
Check in to a cliffside guesthouse or budget hotel — many small guesthouses accept groups; you have 2 rooms for 6 people or budget cottages/camps where available.
Eat at a cliff-side café serving grilled seafood, chapati with curry or pizza/continental options — popular and mid-budget. Street-side stalls offer cheap local snacks like banana fritters and roasted corn as late-night bites.
Walk/auto to Varkala station to board the train to Ernakulam/Aluva (approx 3–4h). Choose a train that gets you to Ernakulam with enough time to reach the airport (aim for arrival 3h before flight).
From Ernakulam Junction/Aluva catch airport shuttle/ local bus or short taxi to Cochin Airport (45–60min from Ernakulam, 20–30min from Aluva). If flight is afternoon, allow buffer for traffic.
