A Two-Day Itinerary for Agra in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Taj Mahal
5 minutes (1.5 km) from Agra Cantt Railway Station

In the morning, visit the iconic Taj Mahal, one of the world's most famous landmarks. Marvel at the stunning white marble structure and learn about its history and significance from your guide. The afternoon can be spent exploring the nearby Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has served as a military base, palace, and prison throughout its 500-year history. In the evening, head to Mehtab Bagh, a garden complex on the banks of the Yamuna River, for a spectacular view of the Taj Mahal at sunset.

  2. Day 2: Fatehpur Sikri and Akbar's Tomb
1 hour 20 minutes (38 km) from Taj Mahal

Begin your day with a trip to Fatehpur Sikri, an abandoned city that was once the capital of the Mughal Empire. Explore the city's grand palaces, stunning mosques, and unique blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. In the afternoon, visit the tomb of Akbar the Great, one of India's most famous rulers. Located in Sikandra, the majestic structure is an excellent example of Mughal architecture and is intricately decorated with carvings and calligraphy. In the evening, return to Agra for some shopping in the local bazaars.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider visiting the Itmad-ud-Daula mausoleum, known as the "Baby Taj" for its resemblance to the Taj Mahal, or the Jama Masjid, one of India's largest mosques. You could also take a day trip to the Keoladeo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to more than 370 bird species. To maximize your fun, try some of the local cuisine, like petha, a sweet made from ash gourd, or chaat, a savoury snack. Don't forget to haggle at the bazaars for souvenirs like leather goods, jewellery, and textiles.
