5-Day Varanasi Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Assi Ghat
    20 minutes (3.2 km) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

    Begin your day at Assi Ghat, one of the most vibrant and lively ghats in Varanasi. Experience a serene boat ride during sunrise and witness the daily morning rituals of the locals. Take a stroll around the ghat and enjoy a morning breakfast at one of the local food stalls. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Banaras Hindu University, one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in India. In the evening, attend the mesmerising Ganga aarti, a Hindu ceremony devoted to the River Ganges.

  2. Day 2: Kashi Vishwanath Temple

    Visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most sacred temples in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex includes several smaller temples and shrines. Take a morning dip in the holy water of Manikarnika Ghat, the main cremation ghat of Varanasi, located nearby. In the afternoon, visit the Ramnagar Fort, an 18th-century fort and palace situated on the eastern bank of the Ganges. In the evening, enjoy a boat ride to witness the beautiful view of the illuminated ghats.

  3. Day 3: Sarnath

    Explore the ancient Buddhist site of Sarnath, where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Visit the Dhamek Stupa, the Chaukhandi Stupa, and the ruins of the ancient monasteries.   4. Day 4: Man Mandir Ghat

    Visit the Man Mandir Ghat, an ancient ghat built by Maharaja Man Singh of Jaipur in the 16th century. Take a morning boat ride to witness the sunrise and visit the 17th-century Jantar Mantar observatory, located nearby, to witness the ancient astronomical instruments. In the afternoon, visit the Alamgir Mosque, a beautiful mosque built by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb on the banks of the Ganges. In the evening, take a stroll around the ghat and enjoy the local street food.

  5. Day 5: Ramnagar
    30 minutes (14.3 km) from Man Mandir Ghat

    Visit the Ramnagar Fort again and attend the famous Ramnagar Ramlila, a grand theatrical performance depicting the story of Lord Rama. The Ramlila takes place during the ten-day festival of Dussehra, usually in October. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Chunar Fort, a historic fort located on the banks of the Ganges. In the evening, take a boat ride to witness the serene and peaceful view of the ghats.

If you have time, visit the nearby city of Allahabad, famous for the Kumbh Mela, the largest peaceful gathering in the world, which takes place every 12 years. You can also take a side trip to the nearby Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary, located about 60 km from Varanasi.
