In the morning, visit the Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in India. It is believed that Lord Rama built the original temple and that it is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples. The temple boasts of a stunning Dravidian architecture and is surrounded by a massive wall. Afternoon is the best time to visit the temple as it is less crowded. In the evening, take a stroll at the nearby Agni Tirtham, a spectacular beach that attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, especially during the full moon day.
Start your day by visiting the Dhanushkodi Beach, a hidden gem of Rameshwaram. The beach is surrounded by blue waters and the sand is white and soft. It is also known as the ‘ghost town’ because of the ruins that are still visible after the 1964 cyclone. Spend your afternoon exploring the Pamban Bridge, which is the longest sea bridge in India. The bridge is an engineering marvel and offers breathtaking views of the sea. End your day with a visit to the Gandhamadhana Parvatham, a small hillock that is believed to have Lord Rama's footprints.
Aside from the itinerary above, we highly recommend visiting the Kothandaramaswamy Temple, which is situated on a hillock overlooking the sea. You can also take a boat ride to the Kurusadai Islands, which is a biosphere reserve and home to a wide variety of marine life. If you have time, take a day trip to Pamban Island and explore the local fishing villages. Don't forget to try the local seafood, especially the prawns and lobsters. Lastly, make sure to catch the sunrise at the Dhanushkodi Beach, it is a sight to behold.
