Somnath and Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Road Trip with a Dwarka-to-Vikhroli Return

Day 1 · Fri, Oct 2
Somnath

Arrive in Somnath, Sightseeing and Rest

  1. Somnath (Prabhas Patan) — Check in, have lunch and recover after the road journey before sightseeing — around noon to mid-afternoon, ~3 hours.
  2. Triveni Sangam (Prabhas Patan) — Take a gentle walk by the meeting of the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati rivers — late afternoon, ~45 minutes.
  3. Bhalka Tirth (near Somnath) — Visit the peaceful Krishna pilgrimage site on the outskirts — late afternoon, ~45 minutes.
  4. Somnath Temple seafront promenade (Prabhas Patan) — Enjoy the coastal setting without trying to fit in the Jyotirlinga darshan today — early evening, ~30 minutes.
  5. Vegetarian restaurant near Somnath Temple (Prabhas Patan) — Have an early, simple dinner and get to bed in time for the early-morning darshan — evening, ~45 minutes; allow roughly ₹200–500 per person.

Arrival, lunch and rest

There’s an important timing issue: Vikhroli to Somnath is roughly 850–900 km, and a road journey normally takes around 16–19 hours with breaks. Leaving at 12 AM on October 2 is therefore unlikely to get you to Somnath by noon. To arrive around noon on the 2nd, leave Vikhroli the previous afternoon or evening and share the driving if possible; if you must leave at midnight on the 2nd, plan for a later arrival and shorten or skip the sightseeing below.

After checking in, have lunch close to your accommodation, then rest for a few hours. Confirm late check-in and parking with your hotel in advance. Keep this afternoon deliberately light: you have an early start for Somnath Jyotirlinga darshan tomorrow.

Gentle afternoon outing

If you’ve arrived with enough time and energy, visit Triveni Sangam first, then continue to Bhalka Tirth by auto-rickshaw or car; allow roughly 10–20 minutes between them, depending on traffic. Keep the visits unhurried, and check local access and timings on arrival rather than relying on a tight schedule.

Return toward the temple area for a short walk along the Somnath Temple seafront promenade. Save the temple darshan itself for early tomorrow, as requested. Finish with an early dinner at a vegetarian restaurant near the temple—expect roughly ₹200–500 per person—and ask your hotel to confirm the morning darshan plan and the best time to set out.

Day 2 · Sat, Oct 3
Somnath to Dwarka

Somnath Darshan and Drive to Dwarka

Getting there from Somnath
Train: Somnath–Okha Express (19252), which stops at Dwarka; roughly 8–9 hours. Take the overnight departure on Oct 3 and confirm the 2026 timetable and availability on IRCTC. Approx. ₹300–₹1,200 depending on class.
Private car via Veraval and Porbandar, roughly 5–6 hours; about ₹6,000–₹10,000 per car. Book through a local taxi operator.
  1. Somnath Temple (Prabhas Patan) — Complete your early-morning Jyotirlinga darshan before setting out for Nageshwar; early morning, ~1.5–2 hours.
  2. Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple (near Dwarka) — Visit the Jyotirlinga shrine after the drive from Somnath; late morning to early afternoon, ~1–1.5 hours.
  3. Lunch at a local vegetarian restaurant (near Nageshwar or on the way into Dwarka) — Take a proper break before sightseeing; early afternoon, ~1 hour, roughly ₹200–500 per person.
  4. Rukmini Devi Temple (Dwarka) — See the small, intricately decorated temple on the outskirts of town; mid-afternoon, ~45 minutes.
  5. Dwarkadhish Temple (Dwarka) — Visit the main temple and its riverside setting, checking the day’s darshan schedule before you go; late afternoon, ~1–1.5 hours.
  6. Gomti Ghat (Dwarka) — End with a gentle walk by the river and waterfront as the light softens; early evening, ~30–45 minutes.

Early morning: Somnath darshan

Aim to reach Somnath Temple around 5:30 AM for darshan, allowing about 1.5–2 hours for security and queues. Temple schedules can vary, so confirm the current morning darshan time the previous evening. Leave Somnath by about 7:30 AM; the road journey to Nageshwar is roughly 230 km and commonly takes around 4–5 hours, depending on traffic and breaks. This is a tight schedule, so keep the departure prompt and plan a short refreshment stop rather than a long breakfast.

Late morning to early afternoon: Nageshwar

After arriving, allow about 1–1.5 hours at Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple for darshan and time around the temple. Reaching by noon is possible with an early start, but traffic, queues or a slow darshan at Somnath could push this later. If noon is a firm cutoff, check both temples’ schedules and current road conditions the day before, and be prepared to shorten the Somnath visit.

Afternoon and evening: Dwarka

Have lunch at a local vegetarian restaurant near Nageshwar or once you reach Dwarka; budget roughly ₹200–500 per person. Then visit Rukmini Devi Temple, followed by Dwarkadhish Temple. Confirm Dwarkadhish’s afternoon/evening darshan window locally, as it closes between sessions and timings may change. Finish at Gomti Ghat, close to the main temple, and keep the rest of the evening flexible. Stay overnight in Dwarka so you can begin the return drive rested.

Planning your return

A drive from Dwarka to Vikhroli is a very long road day—roughly 900 km, often 15–18 hours before extended breaks. Leaving at 10 AM or noon on 4 October is unlikely to get you to Vikhroli by midnight, and pushing through without proper rest is not advisable. To have a realistic chance of reaching by midnight, leave around 4–5 AM, share the driving if possible, and allow for meal and fuel stops; otherwise, plan an overnight stop on the way.

Day 3 · Sun, Oct 4
Dwarka to Vikhroli

Dwarka Sightseeing and Return Drive to Vikhroli

Getting there from Dwarka
Train: board the Okha–Mumbai Saurashtra Mail at Dwarka for Mumbai Central, then take a taxi or local train to Vikhroli. Allow roughly 17–19 hours to Mumbai, plus 1–1.5 hours onward; fares are approximately ₹500–₹2,500 depending on class. Check the Oct 4 schedule and book through IRCTC. This is a long journey, so verify that the train departure leaves enough time after arriving from Somnath.
No clearly dependable faster same-day option: flights would require reaching Jamnagar airport (a long road transfer from Dwarka), and schedules may not suit. If speed matters, check current Jamnagar–Mumbai flights before booking.
  1. Dwarka hotel checkout (central Dwarka) — Have breakfast, collect your bags and start the long return drive; late morning departure is possible, but not compatible with reaching Vikhroli by midnight. — morning, ~45 minutes
  2. Jamnagar (on the Dwarka–Rajkot route) — Take a brief fuel and stretch break before continuing inland. — late morning, ~20–30 minutes
  3. Rajkot (city outskirts) — Stop for lunch and a proper rest; allow extra time for traffic and finding a suitable place to park. — early afternoon, ~45–60 minutes; allow ~₹200–500 per person
  4. Vadodara (on the approach to the Ahmedabad–Mumbai highway) — Take a second meal, fuel and driver-rest break; choose a clean highway restaurant or food court rather than detouring into the city. — early evening, ~45–60 minutes; allow ~₹250–600 per person
  5. Vikhroli (Mumbai) — Continue via the Ahmedabad–Vadodara–Surat–Mumbai corridor, taking breaks whenever the driver needs them. — overnight arrival; roughly 16–19 hours’ driving before breaks

Morning departure

Check out in Dwarka around 10:00 AM if midnight arrival is the priority. A noon departure makes reaching Vikhroli by midnight unrealistic: the road journey is roughly 900–1,000 km and commonly takes about 16–19 hours of driving, before meal, fuel, traffic or rest stops. Even leaving at 10:00 AM, plan for a very late arrival—often after midnight—and don’t try to make up time by driving tired.

On the road

Follow the main route through Jamnagar, Rajkot and Vadodara, then continue toward Mumbai on the highway corridor via Surat. Keep the stops purposeful: a short stretch and fuel break near Jamnagar, lunch around Rajkot, then a longer meal and driver-rest break near Vadodara. Highway food choices vary; budget roughly ₹200–600 per person per meal. Keep water and snacks in the car, and check live traffic and road conditions before setting out.

Arrival in Vikhroli

Allow for congestion approaching Mumbai, especially around the city’s outskirts, and share the driving if possible. If midnight is a firm latest arrival, leave Dwarka substantially earlier than 10:00 AM or plan an overnight stop en route; a 10:00 AM–noon start cannot reliably meet that deadline.
