Two-Day Itinerary for Varanasi in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Assi Ghat
    10 minutes (3.2 km) from Varanasi Junction Station

    Start your day at Assi Ghat, one of the most popular and lively ghats in Varanasi. Witness the morning aarti, a Hindu religious ritual, and take a boat ride in the Ganges to enjoy the sunrise. After breakfast, head to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most important Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Admire the intricate architectural design and the spiritual atmosphere. In the afternoon, visit the Banaras Hindu University, one of the largest residential universities in Asia. Take a stroll in the lush green campus and visit the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum, which has an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, and textiles. In the evening, attend the Ganga aarti, a grand and enchanting ceremony that takes place every evening at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
    30 minutes (10.2 km) from Varanasi City Center

    Start your day by visiting Sarnath, the place where Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Explore the archeological ruins and visit the Sarnath Museum to see the famous Ashoka Pillar and the Lion Capital of Ashoka. In the afternoon, head to the Alamgir Mosque and climb the stairs to get a panoramic view of the city and the Ganges. Afterward, visit the Ramnagar Fort, a beautiful fortification built in the 18th century on the banks of the Ganges. In the evening, take a boat ride in the Ganges to see the mesmerizing Ganga aarti at Manikarnika Ghat.

If you have extra time, make sure to visit the Dhamekh Stupa, a magnificent Buddhist structure that is said to mark the spot where Buddha gave his first sermon. You can also take a side trip to Chunar Fort, a historic fort located on the banks of the Ganges. For an immersive experience, consider taking a walking tour in the old city to taste the local street food, shop for souvenirs, and witness the daily life of the locals. To maximize your fun, hire a bicycle and explore the city at your own pace or take a yoga class in one of the many yoga centers. Lastly, don't forget to indulge in the famous Banarasi paan, a betel leaf preparation that is a speciality of Varanasi.
