2-Day Itinerary for Nepal

  1. Day 1: Swayambhunath Stupa
15 minutes (3.5 km) from Tribhuvan International Airport

Start your day at the Swayambhunath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most sacred Buddhist shrines in Nepal. Also known as the Monkey Temple, this iconic landmark offers breathtaking views of the Kathmandu Valley. In the morning, you will see locals performing their daily rituals and prayers. You can also interact with the resident monkeys, who are quite friendly but can be mischievous. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Kathmandu Durbar Square, where you can explore the intricately designed palaces and temples of the ancient Nepalese kings. In the evening, head to Thamel, a bustling neighbourhood filled with restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops.

  2. Day 2: Pokhara
210 km (5-hour drive) from Kathmandu

Take a day trip to Pokhara, a picturesque lakeside city surrounded by the Himalayas. In the morning, visit the Peace Pagoda, a Buddhist stupa that offers panoramic views of the Annapurna range. You can also take a boat ride on Phewa Lake, the second-largest lake in Nepal, and visit the Tal Barahi Temple, a Hindu shrine located on a small island in the middle of the lake. In the afternoon, explore the International Mountain Museum, which showcases the history and culture of mountaineering in the Himalayas. In the evening, head back to Kathmandu or spend the night in Pokhara.

Recommendations

If you have extra time in Kathmandu, we recommend visiting Pashupatinath Temple, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important Hindu temples in Nepal. You can also take a scenic flight over Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. For side trips, consider visiting Chitwan National Park, a wildlife reserve that is home to Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinos, and Asian elephants. If you're looking to maximize your fun, we suggest trying out some adventure activities such as bungee jumping, paragliding, or white-water rafting. Finally, don't forget to try the local cuisine, which is a unique blend of Indian, Tibetan, and Chinese flavours.
