Exploring Varanasi in 2 Days

  1. Day 1: Ganga Aarti Ceremony
15 minutes (4.3 km) from Varanasi Airport

Start your first day in Varanasi with the mesmerising Ganga Aarti Ceremony, held every evening on the banks of River Ganges. The ceremony involves a group of priests performing choreographed dance moves with fire lamps, flowers and incense sticks, creating an enchanting sight. You'll be able to hear the sounds of hymns and mantras being chanted by the priests, giving you a spiritual experience. After the ceremony, stroll along the river to see the illuminated ghats and the boats floating on the river. For dinner, head to Pizzeria Vatika Cafe, just 10 minutes away, and try their wood-fired pizzas or Indian dishes.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath and Banaras Hindu University
30 minutes (11 km) from Ganga Aarti Ceremony

Start your day with a visit to Sarnath, a sacred Buddhist site where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. Explore the ruins of ancient monasteries, temples and stupas, and visit the Sarnath Museum which houses a collection of Buddhist artifacts. For lunch, head to Vishnu Tea Emporium, a 20-minute drive away, and try their famous "chole bhature" and tea. Next, head to Banaras Hindu University, a renowned educational institution with a sprawling campus. Visit the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum which showcases Indian art, pottery, textiles and sculptures. For dinner, head to Spicy Bites, a 15-minute drive away, and try their chicken tikka and biryani.

Recommendations

If you have time, take a day trip to nearby Chunar Fort, a 2-hour drive from Varanasi, and explore the ancient fort and temple. You can also take a boat ride on River Ganges at sunrise or sunset to see the ghats and temples from a different perspective. To maximise your fun, try the street food in Varanasi, especially the famous "kachori-sabzi", "chaat" and "lassi".
