Majestic Munnar: A 2-Day Itinerary for July 2023

  1. Day 1: Mattupetty Dam
20 minutes (8.6 km) from Munnar Town

Start your first day in Munnar with an early morning visit to Mattupetty Dam, a concrete gravity dam that was built in the late 1940s for water conservation and electricity generation. Enjoy a scenic 30-minute boat ride on the tranquil waters of the dam, surrounded by lush green tea plantations and rolling hills. After the boat ride, take a short hike to the nearby Mattupetty Dairy Farm, where you can learn about dairy farming and sample fresh milk and cheese. In the afternoon, head to the Kundala Lake, located just 6 km from the dam. Take a leisurely stroll around the serene lake and enjoy the picturesque views of the surrounding forest and hills. End the day with a visit to the nearby Echo Point, where you can hear your voice echo back to you from the surrounding hills.

  2. Day 2: Eravikulam National Park
30 minutes (12 km) from Munnar Town

Begin your second day in Munnar with an early morning visit to the Eravikulam National Park, located just a short drive from Munnar Town. The park is home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, a rare mountain goat species that can only be found in the Western Ghats. Take a guided trek through the park to spot these elusive creatures and to enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys. In the afternoon, head to the nearby Tea Museum, where you can learn about the history and production of tea in Munnar. Sample some fresh tea and buy some to take back home as a souvenir. End the day with a visit to the nearby Top Station, the highest point in Munnar. Enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding Western Ghats and the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu.

Recommendations

In addition to the above itinerary, you may also consider visiting the Anamudi Peak, the highest peak in South India, or the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, home to a diverse range of wildlife including elephants, leopards, and giant squirrels. You can also take a day trip to the nearby hill station of Thekkady, famous for its spice plantations and wildlife sanctuary.

To maximize your fun in Munnar, we recommend that you book a private car for your travels, as public transport in the area can be limited. Also, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and carry a light jacket, as the weather in Munnar can be unpredictable.
