2-Day Varanasi Itinerary for July 2023

  1. Day 1: Visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Complex
10 minutes (2.5 km) from your hotel

Morning: Start your day by visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple Complex, which is one of the most famous Hindu temples in India. It is located on the banks of the Ganges river and dedicated to Lord Shiva. The complex consists of several small temples and shrines, and it is known for its religious significance and architectural beauty. Be aware that non-Hindus are not allowed inside the main temple, but you can still explore the other parts of the complex.

Afternoon: Head to Ramnagar Fort, a beautiful 17th-century fort located on the eastern bank of the Ganges river. This fort has a museum that contains a collection of vintage cars, weapons, and other artifacts. The museum is closed on Sundays, so plan accordingly. After exploring the fort, take a stroll along the riverbank and enjoy the beautiful views of the Ganges.

Evening: End your day with a sunset boat ride on the Ganges. You can hire a boat from the Dashashwamedh Ghat, and it will take you on a scenic ride along the river as you watch the sunset over the city. This is a perfect way to end your day in Varanasi.

  2. Day 2: Explore Sarnath and Attend the Ganga Aarti Ceremony
30 minutes (10 km) from your hotel

Morning: Start your day by visiting Sarnath, which is an important Buddhist pilgrimage site. Here, you can visit the Dhamek Stupa, which is a 34-metre tall stupa that was built in the 5th century. You can also visit the Sarnath Museum, which has a collection of Buddhist artifacts and sculptures.

Afternoon: Have lunch at a local restaurant and then head to the Manikarnika Ghat, where you can witness the ancient tradition of cremation. This ghat is considered one of the most sacred ghats in Varanasi, and it is where many Hindus come to perform funeral rites. Please be respectful of the grieving families and do not take pictures.

Evening: End your day with the Ganga Aarti Ceremony, which is a Hindu ritual that takes place every evening at the Dashashwamedh Ghat. This beautiful ceremony involves a group of priests chanting hymns and performing rituals with fire and incense. It is a mesmerising and spiritual event that must not be missed.

Recommendations

If you have more time, consider taking a day trip to the nearby city of Allahabad, which is home to the famous Kumbh Mela festival.
