3-Day City Experiences Itinerary in Varanasi in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Kashi Vishwanath Temple
    16 minutes (3.9 km) from Varanasi Airport

    Start your day by visiting Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. You will witness the beautiful morning aarti or prayer ceremony. Afterward, visit the nearby Manikarnika Ghat, the busiest and oldest cremation ground in the city. In the afternoon, explore the narrow lanes of the old city, where you can find traditional shops selling silk saris, spices, and street food. End your day by attending the evening Ganga aarti, where lamps are lit and offered to the river Ganges.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath Archaeological Site and Museum
    13 minutes (10.2 km) from Kashi Vishwanath Temple

    Drive to Sarnath, a small town near Varanasi, where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. Visit the archaeological site and museum to see the ruins of stupas, monasteries, and temples. In the afternoon, return to the city and visit the Banaras Hindu University, one of the largest residential universities in Asia. Take a walk around the campus, visit the Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum, and enjoy the green surroundings. In the evening, take a boat ride on the Ganges to witness the beautiful ghats and temples, and the colorful sunset.

  3. Day 3: Ramnagar Fort and Museum
    20 minutes (7.9 km) from Sarnath Archaeological Site and Museum

    Visit the Ramnagar Fort, a 17th-century fortress palace on the banks of the Ganges, home to the former Maharaja of Varanasi. Explore the museum inside the fort which displays vintage cars, weapons, and artifacts. Afterward, visit the nearby Chunar Fort, a historic landmark with a beautiful view of the Ganges. In the afternoon, return to the city and visit the Alamgir Mosque, a Mughal-era mosque built in the 17th century. End your day by attending the Ganga aarti at the Dashashwamedh Ghat, another famous Ganges riverfront.

If you have a spare day, take a day trip to Chunar, a quaint town with a fort and ancient temples.
