3-Day Itinerary for Varanasi in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Manikarnika Ghat
    15 minutes (2.5 km) from Varanasi Junction railway station

    Start your day early at Manikarnika Ghat, one of the oldest and busiest ghats in Varanasi. Witness the morning rituals and ceremonies performed by the locals on the riverbank. Take a boat ride on the holy Ganges River and soak in the spiritual ambiance. Afternoon, visit the famous Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the evening, attend the grand Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where a group of priests perform a ritual to worship the river Ganges.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath
    30 minutes (10 km) from Varanasi Junction railway station

    Start your morning by visiting the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Sarnath, where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. Explore the ancient ruins of the monasteries, stupas and temples, and visit the Sarnath Museum to see the collection of Buddhist artifacts and sculptures. In the afternoon, visit the Ramnagar Fort, located on the eastern bank of the Ganges River. The fort contains a museum, a temple, and a clock tower. In the evening, take a stroll in the bustling streets of Varanasi and try the local street food.

  3. Day 3: Assi Ghat
    20 minutes (7.5 km) from Varanasi Junction railway station

    Head to the southern end of the city to explore Assi Ghat, one of the most peaceful and tranquil places in Varanasi. Watch the sunrise on the river and witness the morning rituals performed by the locals. After breakfast, visit the Banaras Hindu University, one of the largest residential universities in Asia. The campus houses various faculties such as Arts, Science, Law and Management, and hosts over 20,000 students. In the evening, visit the Alamgir Mosque, also known as Beni Madhav Ka Darera, built by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

Recommendations

If you have extra time, consider taking a day trip to the nearby town of Chunar and explore the ancient Chunar Fort. You can also visit the nearby town of Mirzapur, famous for its carpet weaving and brassware industry. To maximize your fun, try attending a classical music concert or attending a yoga class in one of the many yoga centers in Varanasi.
