The beautiful Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-visit when in Agra. It is a symbol of eternal love. The magnificent structure is made of white marble and has intricate designs and carvings. Make sure to catch the sunrise or sunset, which makes the site even more breathtaking. Note that the site closes on Fridays, so plan accordingly.
Next, visit the Agra Fort, a red sandstone fort that was the main residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638. The fort has many palaces, halls, and mosques that showcase the Mughal style of architecture. Get a glimpse of history while strolling along the fort's walls. A bit of advice, carry a lot of water with you, as the fort is quite expansive, though it is worth all the walking.
On the second day, visit one of the most well-preserved Mughal cities in India, Fatehpur Sikri, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located just outside of Agra. The deserted city is home to several Mughal-era buildings, such as Jama Masjid and Tomb of Salim Chishti, and has a unique blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. However, note that it is closed on Fridays, so plan accordingly.
If you have more time, you can visit other historical sites near Agra, such as Itmad-ud-Daula's Tomb and Mehtab Bagh. Additionally, the Taj Mahal is open every full moon night and two nights before and after it; try to plan your trip around this time to catch the stunning sight of the monument at night. On the other hand, if you have less time, you can skip Fatehpur Sikri and stick to the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.
