3-Day Varanasi Adventure Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Durga Temple
15 minutes (3.7 km) from Varanasi Junction

The first day kicks off with a visit to the Durga Temple, one of the most unique and famous temples in Varanasi. Dedicated to Durga, the temple features a bright red exterior and intricate architecture. This is also a good spot for a quick stop for some chai (tea) and to catch a glimpse of daily life in Varanasi.

  2. Day 2: Chaukhandi Stupa and Sarnath Archaeological Site
1 hour (10.1 km) from Durga Temple

Day two starts with a visit to the Chaukhandi Stupa, dating back to the Gupta period and considered an important ancient site in India. Here, you can admire the iconic style and architectural designs as well as enjoy some serene moments in the peaceful surroundings.

After that, head to the Sarnath Archaeological Site nearby which was the first place where Buddha taught the Dharma to his followers. Walking through the site, you can find various stupas and ruins of ancient temples.

  3. Day 3: Varanasi Ghats
30 minutes (7.6 km) from Sarnath Archaeological Site

The final day is all about exploring the Varanasi Ghats, an intricate riverfront of stairs leading down to the Ganges River. Starting early in the morning from Assi Ghat, you can take a boat ride to witness the awe-inspiring sights along the banks of the river, accompanied with the sounds of bells and chanting of mantras.

As you move from one ghat to another, you will come across different activities including religious rituals, local shopping markets and street food. Watch out for the 'chai wallahs' carrying the 'kulhad chai' (served in clay cups) as the best fuel to keep you going through a day full of adventure.

Useful Tips

If you have more time, add an evening aarti (prayer) ceremony to your Varanasi Ghats visit. You can't have enough of the mesmerising performances by hundreds of pandits who synchronously wave lamps to the tunes of the Ganga Aarti. Or, if you have less time, you can skip Chaukhandi Stupa as it is quite a distance from the central area of Varanasi. Instead, go for the Ramnagar Fort, situated right across the river offering panoramic views of the serene Ganges River along with an insight into the royal life of the Maharajas of Varanasi.
