Family Friendly Varanasi Itinerary in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Boat Ride on the Ganges River
    10 minutes (1.3 miles) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

    In the morning, take a serene boat ride on the Ganges River to witness the rituals and ceremonies performed on the ghats. In the afternoon, visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most sacred temples in India. End the day with an evening aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where lamps are lit and offerings are made to the river Ganges.

  2. Day 2: Sarnath Excursion
    30 minutes (5.6 miles) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

    Spend the morning at the beautiful Bharat Kala Bhavan Museum, which houses ancient Indian paintings, sculptures and textiles. In the afternoon, take a trip to Sarnath, the site of Buddha's first sermon. Visit the Sarnath Museum, Dhamek Stupa and the majestic ruins of the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar monastery. End the day with a visit to the Chaukhandi Stupa and enjoy a stunning sunset.

  3. Day 3: Ramnagar Fort and Museum
    20 minutes (4.8 miles) from Varanasi Junction Railway Station

    Start the day with a visit to the Ramnagar Fort, a beautiful 18th-century fort on the banks of the river Ganges. Explore the museum inside the fort which showcases vintage cars, royal palanquins, weapons, and other artefacts. In the afternoon, visit the Alamgir Mosque and the Manmandir Ghat. End the day with a cultural performance at the Shri Shatrughan Ji Temple.

Recommendations

Don't miss out on a visit to the Assi Ghat, which is said to be the place where Lord Shiva appeared as a lingam. Side trips to the nearby Chunar Fort and Kashi Vishalakshi Temple are also worth considering. To maximize your fun, try out the local street food and visit the Banaras Hindu University campus. You can also take a day trip to the nearby city of Allahabad which is known for its Sangam, the confluence of three rivers.
