Nature Lover's 3-Day Itinerary in Varanasi - August 2023

  1. Day 1: Sarnath Archaeological Site

    In the morning, explore the Sarnath Archaeological Site, a significant Buddhist pilgrimage site. Walk around the stupas, temples, and museums to learn about the life of Lord Buddha. After a wholesome lunch, visit the Deer Park, where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon. The lush green park and the peaceful environment make it an attractive spot to connect with nature. In the evening, attend the light and sound show, which narrates the story of Lord Buddha's life and his teachings.

  2. Day 2: Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary
    2 hours 45 minutes (70 km) from Varanasi City Centre

    Start your day early and take a refreshing drive to the Chandra Prabha Wildlife Sanctuary located on the Vindhya hills. The sanctuary is famous for its diverse flora and fauna, including tigers, elephants, and crocodiles. Take a guided trek along the many trails and enjoy the natural beauty of the place. After lunch, visit the Rajdari and Devdari waterfalls, which are within the sanctuary. In the evening, relax in the nearby resort and enjoy the spectacular sunset over the hills.

  3. Day 3: Varanasi Riverfront

    Start your day with a sunrise boat ride along the Ganges river, where you will witness the spiritual rituals performed by the locals. After breakfast, explore the various ghats, which are steps leading down to the river, and spend some time watching the pilgrims take a dip in the holy water. In the afternoon, visit the Ramnagar Fort, situated on the banks of the Ganges, which is a mixture of Mughal and Indian architecture. In the evening, attend the Ganga Aarti, a daily worship ceremony performed by the priests on the riverfront that is a mesmerising sight.

Recommendations

If you have more time, visit the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary, located around 4 hours from Varanasi. You can also take a side trip to the nearby city of Allahabad, which is famous for its historical and spiritual significance. To maximise your fun, try local street food, especially chaat and lassi, which are popular. Lastly, carry a water bottle, sunscreen lotion, and insect repellent as you will be spending a lot of time outdoors.
