3-Day Itinerary for Vaishno Devi

  1. Day 1: Vaishno Devi Temple
5 minutes (0.5 km) from Katra

Start your day early and take the 2.5 hour trek to the Vaishno Devi Temple. The temple is one of the most visited shrines in India and is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess, Vaishno Devi. The trek is a steep climb, but the stunning views of the surrounding mountains make it worthwhile. After reaching the temple, take some time to soak in the spiritual atmosphere before descending back to Katra. In the afternoon, explore the local market and try some street food. In the evening, attend the Aarti ceremony at the temple.

  2. Day 2: Bhairavnath Temple and Himkoti
1 hour (16 km) from Katra

After breakfast, head to the Bhairavnath Temple, located on a hilltop overlooking the Vaishno Devi Temple. The temple is dedicated to Bhairavnath, who is believed to be the protector of the region. From there, visit Himkoti, a scenic spot famous for its natural springs. Enjoy a picnic lunch and take a dip in the cool waters. In the evening, return to Katra and spend some time at the local bazaar.

  3. Day 3: Ardhkuwari and Dera Baba Banda
2 hours (27 km) from Katra

On your final day, visit Ardhkuwari, a cave temple located halfway between Katra and the Vaishno Devi Temple. The cave is believed to be the place where Goddess Vaishno Devi meditated for nine months before slaying the demon, Mahishasura. After that, head to Dera Baba Banda, a gurdwara located on the banks of the River Chenab. The gurdwara is dedicated to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, a Sikh warrior who fought against the Mughals. In the evening, return to Katra and board your train/bus back home.
