Family Friendly 3-Day Itinerary for Somnath in July 2023

  1. Day 1: Somnath Temple
    Located in Veraval, 10 minutes (3.2 km) from Somnath Railway Station

    Start your day early by visiting the famous Somnath Temple, which is believed to be the first Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. The temple opens at 6 AM, and you can witness the morning aarti and seek blessings. Afterward, explore the temple complex and its rich history. In the afternoon, head to the nearby Somnath Beach for some relaxation and fun. The beach offers a beautiful view of the Arabian Sea and some water activities like jet skiing and banana boat rides. You can also enjoy some local snacks like bhajiya and gathiya from the food stalls. In the evening, attend the Sound and Light Show at the temple premises, which narrates the temple's history through sound and visual effects.

  2. Day 2: Gir National Park
    Located in Sasan Gir, 1 hour 15 minutes (43 km) from Somnath Temple

    Start your day early and head to the Gir National Park, which is home to the majestic Asiatic Lions. The park opens at 6 AM, and you can take a guided safari tour to spot the lions and other wildlife like leopards, hyenas, and deer. The park also has over 300 species of birds, making it a bird watcher's paradise. In the afternoon, visit the Kamleshwar Dam, located inside the park, and enjoy the serene surroundings and a beautiful view of the dam. You can also have lunch at the nearby canteen run by the Forest Department. In the evening, return to Somnath and visit the Bhalka Tirth, a temple and a holy site associated with Lord Krishna. The temple is located at the place where Lord Krishna is believed to have been mistakenly shot by an arrow and is said to be his last earthly location.

  3. Day 3: Triveni Sangam, Gita Mandir, and Junagarh Fort
    Located in Junagarh, 1 hour 30 minutes (80 km) from Somnath Temple

    Start your day early and head to the Triveni Sangam, a confluence of three rivers - Hiran, Kapila, and Saraswati. The place is considered sacred and is believed to wash away sins. You can take a dip in the river and offer prayers. In the afternoon, visit the Gita Mandir, a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and his teachings in the Bhagavad Gita. The temple has 18 marble pillars, each with a chapter of the Gita inscribed on it. In the evening, visit the Junagarh Fort, which has stood strong for over 400 years. The fort has numerous palaces, temples, and gardens inside, and you can witness the beautiful architecture and history. Do not forget to visit the Uparkot Fort, an ancient fort located behind the Junagarh Fort, which has beautiful caves and structures.

Recommendations

If you have more time, you can visit the nearby Porbandar, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, and explore the Kirti Mandir, a temple dedicated to him. You can also take a day trip to the Girnar mountain range, which has a cluster of Jain temples and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area. Do not forget to try the local Kathiawadi cuisine, which is famous for its spicy and flavorful taste.
