4-Day Cultural Immersion Itinerary in Somnath in August 2023

  1. Day 1: Somnath Temple
    10 minutes (2.4 km) from Somnath Railway Station

    In the morning, visit the famous Somnath Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The temple is believed to have been built by Somraj, the Moon God himself, and has stood here for centuries, despite being destroyed and rebuilt several times. Marvel at the intricate architecture and sculptures that adorn the temple. In the afternoon, head to the nearby Triveni Sangam, the confluence of three holy rivers - Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati. Take a dip in the cool waters and soak in the serene surroundings. In the evening, attend the aarti ceremony at the temple and witness the grandeur of the rituals.

  2. Day 2: Gir National Park
    2 hours 30 minutes (65 km) from Somnath Temple

    Spend the day exploring the Gir National Park, home to the majestic Asiatic lions. Take a guided jeep safari and catch a glimpse of these magnificent beasts in their natural habitat. The park is also home to a variety of other wildlife, including leopards, deer, and hyenas. In the afternoon, visit the Kamleshwar Dam, located inside the park, and enjoy a serene boat ride. In the evening, return to Somnath and sample some of the local delicacies at the street food stalls near the temple.

  3. Day 3: Bhalka Tirth
    10 minutes (2.5 km) from Somnath Temple

    Start your day by visiting the Bhalka Tirth, a sacred site where Lord Krishna is believed to have left his mortal body. The temple here houses a beautiful idol of Lord Krishna and is visited by thousands of devotees every year. In the afternoon, head to the nearby Somnath Beach and spend some time soaking in the sun and sand. The beach is relatively secluded and offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. In the evening, attend the sound and light show at the Somnath temple and learn about the history and legends associated with the temple.

  4. Day 4: Junagadh
    2 hours (80 km) from Somnath Beach

    On your last day, take a trip to the historic city of Junagadh. Visit the Uparkot Fort, built by Chandragupta Maurya in 319 BCE, and explore the many ancient monuments and temples that dot the city. The Jama Masjid, Mahabat Maqbara, and Girnar Hill are some of the must-visit sites in the city. In the evening, head back to Somnath and treat yourself to a relaxing massage at one of the many Ayurvedic spas in the city.
