4-Day Family Friendly Itinerary for Nepal in June 2023

  1. Day 1: Kathmandu Durbar Square
    6 minutes (1.3 km) from Tribhuvan International Airport

    Start your family-friendly trip by visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Kathmandu Durbar Square. This historic site is filled with temples, shrines and palaces that date back to the 12th century. In the morning, explore the courtyards and temples, such as the Taleju Temple and the Kal Bhairav, and admire the intricate carvings and architecture. In the afternoon, visit the National Museum of Nepal, located within the palace complex, to learn more about the country's history and culture. As the day comes to an end, take a leisurely stroll around the square and sample some local delicacies from the street vendors.

  2. Day 2: Swayambhunath Stupa
    20 minutes (3.7 km) from Kathmandu Durbar Square

    Start your day by visiting Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site. In the morning, climb the stairs to the stupa and take in the panoramic views of the city. The stupa is surrounded by smaller temples and shrines, which are worth visiting. In the afternoon, head to the nearby Garden of Dreams, a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, to relax and enjoy some family time. As the day comes to an end, explore the Thamel neighborhood, known for its colorful shops and lively streets.

  3. Day 3: Chitwan National Park
    4 hours (160 km) from Kathmandu

    Take a break from the city and head to Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a diverse range of wildlife, including tigers, rhinos, elephants, and crocodiles. In the morning, take a jungle safari on elephant back or jeep to spot some of the park’s wildlife. In the afternoon, visit a local Tharu village to learn about their unique culture and way of life. As the day comes to an end, enjoy a traditional Tharu cultural dance performance.

  4. Day 4: Pokhara
    4 hours (200 km) from Chitwan National Park

    End your trip by visiting Pokhara, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Nepal. In the morning, take a boat ride on Phewa Lake and enjoy the stunning views of the Annapurna Himalayas. Afterwards, visit the World Peace Pagoda, a Buddhist stupa that overlooks the lake and the city. In the afternoon, visit the International Mountain Museum to learn about the history and culture of the Himalayas and the mountaineers who have conquered them. As the day comes to an end, stroll around the Lakeside area and enjoy some shopping and dining.

If you have more time, consider taking a side trip to Nagarkot, a scenic hill station near Kathmandu, or trekking to the base camp of Mount Everest. For a unique experience, try a momo-making class or a Nepali cooking class. To maximize your fun, hire a local guide who can show you the hidden gems and local favorites.
