North Goa Shoestring Budget Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fort Aguada
28 minutes (9.4 miles) from Dabolim Airport

Fort Aguada is an excellent place to start your Goa trip. Morning is the best time to visit as it opens at 9:30 am. The fort is a 17th-century Portuguese fort constructed to defend against the Dutch and Marathas. Afternoon head to Calangute Beach, which is 20 minutes from the fort. Calangute is the busiest and most commercial of all beaches. In the evening, you can enjoy some local Goan cuisine at one of the many shacks or restaurants in the area.

  2. Day 2: Basilica of Bom Jesus
35 minutes (9.1 miles) from Calangute Beach

The city of Old Goa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Basilica of Bom Jesus is a must-visit attraction. The church is open from 9 am to 6:30 pm, so it's best to visit in the morning. Afternoon head to the nearby Ancestral Goa Museum, which showcases Goan rural life. In the evening, head to the vibrant Panaji market to enjoy the local street food and shop for souvenirs.

Recommendations

Other attractions to consider include the Chapora Fort, Dudhsagar Falls, and the Saturday Night Market in Arpora. For a side trip, you can visit the quiet town of Mapusa, located 17 minutes from Fort Aguada. To maximize your fun on a shoestring budget, try cycling along the scenic roads and beaches or opt for a homestay instead of a hotel. Lastly, make sure to try the local seafood and Feni drink when in Goa, as they are a significant part of Goan culture.
