Alternatively, you can opt for car rentals for more flexibility outside of large cities. Train and bus schedules also offer affordable and fast transportation between the major cities. Expect to spend between €200-€500 total on transportation depending on your preferences.
If you have more time, consider spending an extra day in Florence or renting a villa in the countryside. Alternatively, if you have less time, skip Portovenere and go straight to Genoa.
Ideally located between Rome and Florence, the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO) is the best option to start your journey. For a loop itinerary, you can choose to depart from Venice or travel back to Rome to catch your flight home. Marco Polo Airport (VCE) in Venice and Ciampino–G.B. Pastine International Airport (CIA) in Rome are also popular airports in Italy.
