3-Day Aurangabad Itinerary for July 2023

  1. Day 1: Bibi Ka Maqbara
    15 minutes (5.2 km) from Aurangabad Airport

    The morning is the best time to explore Bibi Ka Maqbara. This magnificent monument is also known as the "Taj of the Deccan" and is a replica of the Taj Mahal in Agra. The intricate carvings and design on the tomb are worth admiring, and the surrounding gardens are perfect for a stroll. In the afternoon, visit the nearby Panchakki, an ancient watermill that uses water to power its flour mill and grinding stones. In the evening, explore the buzzing Aurangabad city center and try some local street food.

  2. Day 2: Ellora Caves and Grishneshwar Temple
    45 minutes (30.9 km) from Bibi Ka Maqbara

    The morning should start early as Ellora Caves complex has more than 30 caves to explore. These caves are famous for their intricate rock-cut architecture, beautiful sculptures and murals. It is advised to hire a guide to understand the history and meaning behind the carvings. In the afternoon, visit the Grishneshwar Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is an important pilgrimage site and the temple architecture is worth admiring. In the evening, head back to Aurangabad and take a stroll around the Gulmandi market to experience the local shopping culture.

  3. Day 3: Daulatabad Fort and Bhadra Maruti Temple
    1 hour 15 minutes (20.3 km) from Grishneshwar Temple

    The morning should start early as it takes time to explore the Daulatabad Fort complex. The fort is situated on a hill and requires a trek to reach the top. However, the panoramic view of the surroundings from the top is breathtaking. In the afternoon, head to the Bhadra Maruti Temple, a unique temple where Lord Hanuman is worshipped in a reclining position. It is believed to be one of the largest statues of Lord Hanuman in India. In the evening, head back to Aurangabad and enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant.

You can also consider visiting the Ajanta Caves, which are located around 100 km from Aurangabad. These rock-cut caves are famous for their beautiful paintings and murals. Another side trip could be to the Lonar Crater Lake, which is located around 150 km from Aurangabad. It is India's only saltwater lake formed by a meteor impact. To maximize your fun, try to plan your visit during the Aurangabad Festival in December, which showcases the local culture, food and music. You can also shop for locally-made handicrafts and souvenirs at the festival.
